Something we all hear about in the news and social media, is that drunk driving is a terrible, but unfortunately common occurrence in America. The amount of people who have confessed to driving while drunk actually outnumbers the amount of residents in the state of Texas! Too many drivers are too confident when they’ve had too much to drink, but we urge drivers to take a moment to look at the following statistics, and learn the sobering facts.
More Danger Than You Think
At any given time of day, it is estimated that there are around 300,000 drunk drivers on the road. At night, motorists are four times more likely to drive drunk. More than 29 million drivers have admitted to driving while intoxicated. Men between 24 and 29 are the drivers most often arrested for DUI.
Too Many Drunk Drivers Are Not Arrested
Despite the incredibly high number of drunk drivers on the road daily, only a tiny 10% are actually arrested. That means that over a quarter million drunk drivers are stopped, but let go. Luckily, some police departments set up driving check points to catch and arrest drunk drivers.
Convicted But Still Not Stopped
Studies and polls alike have shown us that drunk drivers often continue to drive with a suspended license! Some modern devices such as BAC monitoring units can stop some drivers, but these are typically only used for alcoholics that have been convicted more than once.
Injuries And Fatalities Increase Yearly
Every two minutes, a person is injures in a DUI-related accident. Every 53 minutes, at least one of those people is killed by their injuries. In the past decade alone, countless sober people, in and out of vehicles, have lost their lives to drunk drivers.
Everyone Is At Risk
There are so many drunk drivers on the road, that 2 out of 3 motorists will be involved in a drunk-driving accident in their lifetime. Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter if you are the one drinking or not, all drivers are at risk when someone drives drunk.
